I really dislike this game and bought it twice. It reminds me of every NES platformer that would frustrate me as a child. The devs really nailed the aesthetic, music, and difficulty. Nice pixel art in the cutscenes, the music ain't bad either but overall the actual game itself isn't anything that approaches the best action plats on the NES. Don't expect anything near Ninja Gaiden for instance. But if you really love the NES aesthetic and want to try a game that feels like an NES game of that era that's pretty short, well, I'm sure you haven't played all the NES games that fit under that umbrella...

Oniken is yet another game by JoyMasher that perfectly captures the NES aesthetic and what made the NES titles great back in the day. I believe it’s actually their first game, but I played this one right after Odallus: The Dark Call, and I think Oniken felt somewhat superior compared to it. Especially the soundtrack. Oniken is a fun side-scroller inspired by old pixelated games like Ninja Gaiden and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, following the same level of difficulty and challenge while being accompanied by a nice soundtrack. Unfortunately, the game has far too many inexcusable technical limitations and bugs to be truly recommendable.

This game is badass. It genuinely feels like it could've released in the 1980s. If you like challenging linear platformers of that era (e.g. The NES Ninja Gaidens, Castlevania, Contra), you will love this.

I get it that there were good games for the NES, but there's a reason the SNES was made. It wasn't about better graphics, it was to offer a better means at playing a game. So why JoyMasher or anyone else thinks it's a good idea to make 'authentic-like' NES games is beyond me. The gameplay is tedious and aggravating. Whether it was made back then, or in modern-day. Nostalgia fodder. Charming when it came out. Today, not so much. It's well-made, for a game that looks like it came out of the oven 30 years too late. There are TWO games on Steam that play and feel like classic NES / SNES games. Oniken is one of them. Many side-scrollers and platformers claim to play and / or feel like they're out of the 80's.
