Checking those Shantae games to see which ones are worth it. Oh, right! I did play this, on the 3DS. I remember it being perfectly fine; certainly it doesn't have the horrible map from Risky's Revenge, or the horrible level design from Risky's Revenge. It's not *great* either, but it's fine. The only bad thing about this game is Mud Bog Island. Removing it would probably solve world hunger and reverse climate change.

The gameplay is that of a mediocre platformer, but the characters were entertaining and funny and I want to like the game more than I did. Near the end it stopped being fun and I just wanted to finish it. Some of the secrets were hidden in ways that felt more tedious than rewarding to find, and I didn't want to scour the levels looking for the last dark magics just to 100% it and fight the harder boss. I decided to play it because I wanted some 2D platforming action on my Deck. And it is an absolute blast to play. One of the best metroidvania platformers you can get. Much recommended. However, I have to admit, the art direction does something to me.
